Menino Tricycle

Wood & cork

The purpose behind this project was to create a tricycle with a shape that will directly attract the children eyes. I wanted to create a minimalist and very light tricycle. To do so, I chose to work only with wood; the main shape is made of 2 birch wood plates in order to create a light bone structure.

The 2 plates are linked with a solid wood block where the handlebar goes through. Below it, a small mechanism blocks the handlebar so the 2 small wheels won’t touch the bone structure. Different from the basic triangular saddle and in order to allow a better sitting for the kids because of the space between the 2 wooden plates, I decided to create a square saddle with rounded edges. For the wheels I used cork instead of the typical rubber put around the wheels. Because of its soft and cushiony surface, the cork wood acts like a natural rubber that allows the wheels to turn better.

At the young age of 3 to 5 years old it is important to encourage creativity, that’s why the main shape of the tricycle is simple but at the same time can be seen in different ways. It could take the shape of a whale, a bean, etc.
